Abstract

Renewable energy subsidies have emerged as a central component of environmental and energy policy frameworks worldwide. This paper explores the political economy behind these subsidies by analyzing the distributional effects, stakeholder dynamics, and policy mechanisms that determine their allocation and sustainability. The study draws on empirical data, econometric models, and case studies to identify the economic winners and losers of subsidy schemes while examining how public choice theory explains the underlying decision-making processes. It also evaluates how interest groups, institutional settings, and political incentives shape outcomes in subsidy deployment. The research demonstrates that while renewable energy subsidies can significantly accelerate clean energy transitions, they often result in complex redistributive effects and political contestation. The paper concludes with recommendations for designing more efficient and equitable subsidy policies.
