Abstract

The landscape of physiotherapy and rehabilitation science is undergoing a paradigm shift, driven by technological innovation, a deeper understanding of neuroplasticity, and the demand for patient-centered care. This paper reviews recent advances that are transforming clinical practice, focusing on three interconnected pillars: innovative therapeutic techniques, technology-enhanced rehabilitation, and the integration of digital healthcare systems. We explore the efficacy of advanced manual therapy combined with movement science, the rise of virtual and augmented reality in motor learning, the application of wearable sensors and telerehabilitation for remote patient management, and the potential of artificial intelligence in clinical decision-making. The synthesis of current evidence suggests that while these innovations promise enhanced outcomes and accessibility, significant challenges related to implementation fidelity, data security, digital literacy, and equitable access remain. This paper argues for a hybrid model of care that strategically blends foundational physiotherapy principles with validated digital tools. Future directions include rigorous comparative effectiveness research, the development of interoperable digital platforms, and updated educational curricula to prepare next-generation practitioners for a digitally enhanced clinical reality. Ultimately, the judicious integration of these advances holds the potential to create a more responsive, predictive, and personalized rehabilitation ecosystem.
